چکیده

The characteristics of cholesteric liquid crystals can be controlled by light irradiation if conformationally photo-active molecules are present. Recently, control of the selective reflection band (spiral pitch) in nemato-chiral mixtures was demonstrated when photosensitive molecules, namely nematic azoxy-based compounds, were used as the host material. In this report, the investigation of light induced effects in cholesterics with azoxy-based host materials is continued to highlight the mechanisms of the response. Different non-photosensitive chiral materials were added to different azoxy-nematic liquid crystals and the pitch change caused by UV irradiation was investigated. A change in the pitch of 50– 210nm was observed depending on the exposure time and the intensity of the light. This effect is reversible: under illumination at wavelengths greater than 410nm, the pitch shifts in the opposite direction. The dependence of the selective reflection band and the full-width-at-half-maximum of the band on the exposure time and the temperature dependence of the selective reflection band were investigated. The lowering of the phase transition temperature and narrowing of the width of the selective reflection band can be explained by a decrease in the orientational

Photonic defect modes of cholesteric liquid crystals.

We investigate defect modes of cholesteric liquid crystals as photonic band gap materials. For normal incidence of light, cholesteric liquid crystals exhibit total reflection for the circular polarization with the same handedness as that of cholesteric helix. However, the other orthogonal component is completely transmitted. When we replace a thin layer of liquid crystal by an isotropic materia...

Rapid reversible phototuning of lasing frequency in dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal.

Lasing in induced cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) containing highly photosensitive azo chiral dopant (ChD) and pyrromethene laser dye was investigated. Due to the absence of excitation energy transfer from the dye molecules to the molecules of ChD in such a system, a low lasing threshold was achieved. When using violet and green light-emitting diodes, reversible frequency tuning was obtained i...

Particle-stabilized defect gel in cholesteric liquid crystals

Dispersions of colloidal particles in cholesteric liquid crystals form an unusual solid by stabilizing a network of linear defects under tension in the ideal layered structure of the cholesteric. The large length scales of the cholesteric liquid crystals allowed direct observation of the network structure, and its properties were correlated with rheological measurements of elasticity. This syst...

Interlaced cholesteric liquid crystal fingerprint textures via sequential UV-induced polymer- stabilization

Two types of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) fingerprint structures, namely developable-modulation (DM) and growing-modulation (GM), can be contemporaneously prepared in polymer stabilized CLC (PSCLC) composites, to be mutually perpendicular in a repeatable and reversible voltage-switching process when the cell thickness to pitch length ratios (d/P) were appropriately chosen. PSCLC grating str...
